Quitters Unite
Project Goals: The Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, a volunteer-based health charity, originally created the "Quitters Unite" initiative in 2008 as part of the BC Healthy Living Alliance Tobacco Reduction Strategy to address higher smoking rates among young adults age 19-29. The goals of the Quitters Unite website were to provide young adults with information and support to help them quit smoking when they're ready. The 3-part focus in developing the site was: a fresh visual presentation to appeal to a youth-focussed audience, a greatly increased level of user interactivity, and easier content management for the organization managing the site.
Our Approach: The site, built in Drupal, now offers a personalized "quit plan" including a cigarette cost calculator, photo & story contests, discussion forums, blogs and detailed information about tobacco and smoking quit tips. The site was designed to accommodate user registration and launched with online photo and story contests requiring photo/video/text uploads as well as a voting system. Once signed in, a cost calculator and an innovative, dynamically generated health benefits graph allows site users to chart their quit progress and see not only the accumulated savings but short and long-term health benefits of their continued success. The expanded community portion of the website now allows users to engage one another in forum and blog discussions.
Results: At the same time this exciting tool was launched, the Quitters Unite sent a team out to university campuses around the province to generate awareness and drive traffic to the website. Its long-term success is still being monitored and analyzed, but as of the site being live for one-month, it has already seen thousands of visitors to its contest pages and a dramatic increase in new registrations.
