CLAC Wellness
Project Goals: Our clients at the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) approached us with an idea for a wellness-focused pilot program they wanted to start for their union members. They wanted to promote, track and provide incentives for overall personal wellness - physical, mental, emotional - amongst their members. Their goal was to roll out some sort of portal that would allow members to find information on wellness, and to encourage people to live out and track their progress on a daily basis, and to be rewarded for it.
Our Approach: We worked closely and collaboratively with CLAC in order to translate their project goals into a custom, working program on the web. Using an open source framework, we developed a portal in which users could create their individual profiles, read resources on wellness posted by CLAC, and decide which challenge they wanted to sign up for. There were 3 different types of challenges we created - one focused on losing weight, one on "steps walked per day" and one that was customizable to whatever area the member wanted to focus on, such as drinking more water or logging gym time. The challenges were run in a team-based style to foster camaraderie in the workplace amongst those taking part.
We also created an area to support the sponsors and prizes associated with the challenges. Once members accumulate so many points through achieving their personal and team goals, they're able to browse various rewards and "cash in" on whichever one they selected, also done through the website. One particularly useful feature we implemented in the rewards section, was making it region-specific. Based on the member's IP address, we made it possible to show only those rewards that might interest that particular member. For example, if hockey tickets were listed as a prize, the companies located in that same area of their hockey home team would see that prize listed.
Results: Being able to customize this program by location made it more flexible and useful when this pilot program moved into Phase 2, and expanded from BC into Alberta as well. As more and more employers come on board, the program continues to grow in its impact and popularity. It's a great reflection of the core values of CLAC and we were happy to be part of making it a reality.
